Some territories of contemporary Ukraine during its history were part of different states: Old Russ, Khazarsky Kaganat (in the 7-8 th centuries A.D. the ancient state that officially accepted Judaism), Lithuania, Poland (14-17th centuries), tsarist Russia and USSR. So different cultures and peoples influenced the culture of this country where you can still find Old Russ churches, Roman Catholic cathedrals, Tripil culture settlements, Scythian burial hills, Jewish shrines and even masques.

Eastern department of the museum is famous for its collection of masterpieces from India, China & Japan (from the 1st century B.C. to the 20th century)
